Hi friends, welcome to a side project through Room Tone — MovieTone! It’s like MovieFone but for Y2K.
My friends who know me as the go-to point-of-contact for anything movies often ask what I’m watching, or what is good to watch, or how to watch things. Sure, Fandango helps a little — but there can be so much out there under the radar, coupled between the great arthouse and indie theaters in Chicago, the bevy of streamers (both big and small), and those sneaky screenings and festivals that speed on by.
Every week I’ll give the rundown on what’s playing across the physical and metaphysical media landscape so that you can choose your own adventure in becoming a movie freak like me. For this first iteration we just have in-person screenings, but this newsletter will build out to include streaming and VOD options in the future.

Daniella’s commentary: I’m not going to share every single chain option in this guide — especially AMC and Regal — but sometimes there are still chains worthy of mention, particularly the lesser-known chains on the South Side, the smaller chains like Landmark (I’m lowkey obsessed with Landmark Century Cinema, but that’s for another time), and the special screenings you can find at AMC and Regal that aren’t often publicized.
I’m including Alamo Drafthouse too, because, to my chagrin, some of their programming is cool. But I’ll leave here that I am not a huge fan of Alamo Drafthouse coming to Chicago, given both its location and that Chicago already has a slew of theaters with curated programming. The original Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas may very well be worth its salt, but the expansions cater to the brunch/Instagram culture of affluent portions of cities that I just don’t really dig. I’ll give it some credit though — Wrigleyville is an incredibly appropriate location!

Daniella’s commentary: The Davis Theater in Lincoln Square might be notably absent from this list. I’m not going to discourage you from going to The Davis Theater, but they dug their heels in during the election by supporting and screening a bizarre propaganda film targeting the Chicago Teacher’s Union. Now, this isn’t necessarily the only time a movie theater has made an odd political choice (The Music Box was recently called out for scheduling a screening of the movie Actors which led to the removal of the film from their calendar), but since the Davis Theater isn’t currently running any curated programming or special screenings, I’m leaving it off the list for now.
