MovieTone: June 30-July 5, 2023
Your guide to what's playing in physical spaces this week.
Welcome to another week of MovieTone! It’s like MovieFone but for Y2K.
Every week I’ll give the rundown on what’s playing across the physical and metaphysical media landscape so that you can choose your own adventure in becoming a movie freak like me. This guide includes a Key and quick navigation links so that you can jump between sections. Formatting may change over the weeks as I get into a groove and figure out the best delivery system!
This week I wanted to include some Daniella recommendations! I won’t do this every week, but as I went through the list, there were quite a few movies I’m affectionate towards that I wanted to highlight:
🌍 Past Lives | PG-13 | 1 hour 46 minutes | English, Korean
I’ve been dreadfully behind on new releases this year (partially why I can’t promise consistent recommendations), but I managed to catch Past Lives last weekend and was stunned. Greta Lee and John Magaro (the latter of whom is notably also wonderful in this year’s Showing Up) deliver two of my favorite performances in a long time. If you’re looking for a movie for grown-ups — and as an added bonus, one that falls in my favorite “We had each other for a Minute” subgenre — I can’t recommend Past Lives enough. Based on its showtimes this upcoming week, I suspect it won’t be in theaters much longer, so steal yourself away for a couple of hours with this little story if you can.
🏙️🏳️🌈 The Woodstock of House | NR | 1 hour 38 minutes | English
I have not yet seen this movie, but I highly recommend seeking out this local gem while it’s at the Gene Siskel Film Center to learn more about the pockets of Chicago’s cultural history that often are given little attention.
Special screenings:
Lost in America — July 3 — 7:00 pm — Music Box Theatre
Lost in America is a comedy that goes down easy but hits you with laughter without pause. It’s the kind of movie that had me wondering if Albert Brooks is the genuine version of what Woody Allen movies pretend to be, and thinking about how much of a prototype the movie is for the navel-gazing banter of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. If you feel so inclined to acknowledge America this coming week, Lost in America is an appropriate tribute.
🌍 Fantastic Fest Presents: Shin Ultraman (Subtitled) — July 4 — 7:30 pm — Alamo Drafthouse
I was bummed that I missed this while it was at the Chicago Int’l Film Festival. I highly recommend seeking out this reimagining of the Japanese Ultraman series from the team that brought us Shin Godzilla (and one of the raddest posters in recent memory):
I’m always pro-seeing movies on 4th of July. It’s air-conditioned, the explosions don’t cause air pollution, and you can turn your brain off without venturing into cultish patriotism.
🏳️⚧️ Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean — July 5 — 7:30 pm — Alamo Drafthouse
This Robert Altman film is his first post-Popeye, coming in the midst of his Hollywood exile. It’s an adaptation of the play of the same name (whose 1982 Broadway run Altman had also directed) and feels like a play with its theatrical conventions and staging. For some, that might be a bad thing, but in this movie, the single-setting staginess serves as a reminder of the ghost of youth that haunts this group of women (a stunning cast of Sandy Dennis, Cher, Karen Black, Sudie Bond, and Kathy Bates). The trans representation in the movie is imperfect — though it contains more empathy than you might expect — which is worth keeping in mind. However, the film is ultimately about one’s understanding of their identity as A Woman™️, challenged to the point of collapse, and now in the position of reevaluating what womanhood really means in the role of a friend, a lover, a mother, and a wife in the harsh and messy aftermath of broken American dreams. For as much as 3 Women is about curating womanhood, Come Back to the 5 and Dime… is about what happens when that artiface falls apart.
